39. Deutsches Jazzfestival Frankfurt dag 3

(The third evening in Frankfurt couldn't compete with the Wyatt Variations. But it was mostly a good evening.)

(The evening opened with Gilad Atzmon & The Orient House Ensemble. Gilad Atzmon starred yesterday as guest with Soupsongs, but proved to be very good in his own right.)

(Gilad Atzmon is an incredible good saxophone player and his band is as good. They play a combination of bebop with oriëntal musical influences.)

(Asaf Sirkis played the drums straight and functional, no endless solo's, only being the basis of the band.)

(Yaron Stavi played, just like Gilad Atzmon, on the last two Robert Wyatt cd's. So there was a link with Friday evening. But the music was completely different.)

(Frank Harrison played the keyboards and made the quartet complete. They played numbers from their last cd Refuge, less political than previous issues, but with numbers like Autumn in Bagdad and Burning Bush it was certainly political.)

(Gilad Atzmon also played sopranosax and even sax without a mouthpiece. A very good performance, a band to keep in sight!

(Next was the second performance of the hr-Bigband with Uri Caine as composer and Örjan Falhstöm as conductor., nice concert, better than on thursday.)

(The evening ended with The Exploding Star Orchestra, a freejazz group that still lives in the sixties. Interesting but not convincing. At times the seven musicians were playing seven solo's at once. 500 of the 1000 visitors left within half an hour.)

39. Deutsches Jazzfestival Frankfurt dag 2

(Friday evening was the reason why we were in Frankfurt: The Wyatt Variations, an evening curated by Robert Wyatt, with his music played by three different groups. Robert Wyatt says he isn't a jazz musician, but his music is sometimes jazz, sometimes pop and sometimes pure singer-songwriter. He hasn't performed his songs live since 1974, after that he did some guestappearances and a couple of television shows. He is seldom seen in public and to the surprise of organisation and public, he came over to attend this evening in person. He got a deserved standing ovation for that.)

(The first group, Market Rasen, directly made clear why Robert Wyatt belongs at a jazzfestival. No covers, but their own interpretation of Robert Wyatt songs, or their own songs with lots of Robert Wyatt influences.)

Max Nagl (altsax en klarinet) is de drijvende kracht achter de Oostenrijkse groep Market Rasen, een project waarmee hij in 2006 een cd opnam 'dedicated to the music of Robert Wyatt'.
(Max Nagl (altsaxophone and clarinet) is the driving force behind Market Rasen, a project from 2006 that resulted in a cd 'dedicated to the music of Robert Wyatt'.)

(Drummer Herbert Pirker laid down a good base and that seemed not unnecessary, because they looked a bit nervous, specially at the beginning, playing in front of their hero.)

Little Red Riding Hood Hit the Road.
Een geweldig begin van de avond!
(Clemens Wenger (keyboards and electronics) made a unity of it all, he did a great job. We recognized Born Again Cretin, CP Jeebies, The British Road and Alliance, but also heard parts of Shipbuilding, Sea Song en Little Red Riding Hood Hit the Road.
A great start of the evening!)

(Market Garden was instrumental, Dondestan! had a couple of vocalists. The sixmanband was concieved in 2003 as part of the imaginairy Unofficial Robert Wyatt Fan Club.)

(Pianist and singer John Greaves is an old friend of Robert Wyatt, he played the bass on one song of Ruth is Stranger Than Richard (1975) and Robert Wyatt sang on records of Henry Cow.)

(The most difficult part of playing Robert Wyatt's songs are the vocals. Dondestan! needed three singers for it. Not only John Greaves, also drummer Jacques Mahieux sang on a couple of songs.)

(Third singer was Karen Mantler, the organ and harmonica player of the band. She has sung Robert Wyatt songs before with Soupsongs in 2001 at the Meltdown Festival in London.)

(Dondestan! is an international group with English, American and French members. French clarinetplayer Sylvain Kassap made a huge impression.)

Bassplayer Hélène Labarrière, also French, stayed in the background, but was a driving force behind the band. The concert did not only consist of songs from Robert Wyatt's soloperiod, there were also Soft Machine and Matching Mole songs played.

(Sixth member of Dondestan! is guitarplayer Jef Morin. They played songs like Pataphysical Introduction (Soft Machine), Oh Caroline (Matching Mole), God Song, Sea Song, Alliance, The Age of Self and of course Karen Mantler's The Official Robert Wyatt Fan Club Song.)

(Special guest was Michael Mantler, trumpetplayer and father of Karen. Also an old acquaintance, Robert worked on several records of Michael Mantler.
It was a very special performance, quite different from Market Rasen, but also very Robert Wyatt.)

(After that there was a short interview with Robert Wyatt, projected on the screen above the stage. Seemed like he was enjoying the concerts so far.)

(After the break, 30 minutes sharp, it was time for Soupsongs, the band around tromboneplayer Annie Whitehead. Almost every member of this hand has played at some time with Robert Wyatt.)

(Soupsongs exist since 1999 en performes sporadically and with different musicians. Of course Annie Whitehead is always there. Just like on Robert Wyatt's last three cd's.)

(Harry Becket on trumpet and flugelhorn is also a permanent and prominent member of Soupsongs.)

(Same goes for the excellent Jennifer Maidman on guitar and vocals,)

..en Liam Genockey fantastisch op drums.
(..and Liam Genockey fantastic on drums.)

(For the vocals several singers were needed to cover Robert Wyatt's music, like the British singer Sarah Jane Morris, the picture says it all)

Jennifer Maidman was singer on a lot of songs, but also the Italian singer Christina Dona got her share.

(And sometimes they all sang together. The concert started with Little Red Riding Hood Hit the Road, Alifib and Alife, fantasticly played and much appreciated by the audience. And it even got better from thereon.)

Dudley Phillips speelde bas.
(Dudley Phillips played bass. After the fantastic opening followed Alliance, Sea Song and Old Europe.)

Steve Lodder op keyboards. Het concert ging verder met Left on Man, Maryan en natuurlijk het heerlijke Soupsong.
(Steve Lodder on keyboards. The concert continued with Left on Man, Maryan and the delicious Soupsong.)

(Mark Lockheart on saxes. The crowd went crazy and got the band into three encores. First the beautiful and emotional Free Will & Testament, fantasticly sung by Jennifer Maidman.)

(Special guest was Gilad Atzmon, good musical and polical friend of Robert Wyatt. The second encore was Dondestan, in which everybody got a chance to improvise short solos. It was a party on stage.)

(For the encores Sylvain Kassap of Dondestan! joined the band. The concert ended with Heaps of Sheeps and if the audience would have had anything to say about it, they could have gone on much longer. But even a standing ovation (the only one during this festival), couldn't convince the organisation.)

(After the concert Robert Wyatt signed records for some enthousiastic fans. We went back to our hotel, knowing we had been to one of the best concerts ever.)

39. Deutsches Jazzfestival Frankfurt dag 1

(Today was the first day of the Frankfurt jazzfestival. Quite different from what we're used to in Holland. Three evenings with three bands with a strict schedule, due to the live radiobroadcast. The hr-Sendesaal is very good, especially the acoustics.)

(On the first day John Surman and Howard Moody played duets for an hour on soprana- and baritonsaxophone and Concertorgan. One of the best organs in the world, except maybe for some cathedrals.)

(The organ itself was not visible, but was projected on a screen above the stage.)

(John Surman on his baritonsaxophone, which he describes as being as flexible as a dubbledecker bus in a field.)

(Howard Moody enjoys to play this fantastic organ. The concert was great, the combination quite unusual, we only knew it from the Dutch Trio Windstreken.)

(Next the Christof Lauer/Patrice Héral-duo (saxophoon/percussion) een nice set. In the second half of their set the, pianist Yuriy Sych joined them.)

(Frankfurter Christof Lauer is the originator of this duo with saxophone and percussion, again a not very usual combination.)

(The French Patrice Héral is not only plays percussion, he also samples it live. Interesting concept, but we think it needs some more study.)

(The young pianist Yuriy Sych from Frankfurt was the much needed extension of this duo in the second half of the concert.)

(Last concert of the evening was by the hr-Bigband with Bill Frisell on guitar and Michael Gibbs as conductor. The program was called Monk, Mingus & Mee, but only two Mingus songs were played.)

(Bill Frisell is a great guitarplayer en the hr-Bigband was also very good, with some fantastic solo's. We had the impression that conductor Michael Gibbs and the band didn't go together very well. On Saturday the band will be back with another conductor, let's see what happens.
It was anice evening with the John Surman/Howard Moody duo as the highlight of the day. But tomorrow is the big day when it's time for the Wyatt Variations!)
