(The third evening in Frankfurt couldn't compete with the Wyatt Variations. But it was mostly a good evening.)
De avond werd geopend door Gilad Atzmon & The Orient House Ensemble. Gilad Atzmon schitterde gisteren nog als gast bij Soupsongs en bleek ook op eigen benen geweldig goed te zijn.
(The evening opened with Gilad Atzmon & The Orient House Ensemble. Gilad Atzmon starred yesterday as guest with Soupsongs, but proved to be very good in his own right.)
Gilad Atzmon is een fantastische saxofonist en zijn band is niet minder. Ze spelen een combinatie van bebop met oriëntaalse invloeden.
(Gilad Atzmon is an incredible good saxophone player and his band is as good. They play a combination of bebop with oriëntal musical influences.)
Asaf Sirkis op drums speelde strak en functioneel, geen eindeloze solo's, alleen de basis voor de band.
(Asaf Sirkis played the drums straight and functional, no endless solo's, only being the basis of the band.)
Yaron Stavi speelde, net als Gilad Atzmon, mee op de laatste twee cd's van Robert Wyatt. Dus een link met vrijdagavond was er wel. Maar de muziek was heel anders.
(Yaron Stavi played, just like Gilad Atzmon, on the last two Robert Wyatt cd's. So there was a link with Friday evening. But the music was completely different.)
Frank Harrison speelde keyboards en vervolmaakte het kwartet. Ze speelden nummers van de laatste cd Refuge, minder politiek getint dan vorige cd's, maar met nummers als Autumn in Bagdad en Burning Bush was er toch zeker sprake van een politieke lading.
(Frank Harrison played the keyboards and made the quartet complete. They played numbers from their last cd Refuge, less political than previous issues, but with numbers like Autumn in Bagdad and Burning Bush it was certainly political.)
Gilad Atzmon speelde trouwens ook sopraansax en hij speelde zelfs sax zonder mondstuk. Een zeer goed optreden, een band om in de gaten te houden!
(Gilad Atzmon also played sopranosax and even sax without a mouthpiece. A very good performance, a band to keep in sight!
Daarna kwam de hr-Bigband weer op het podium met dit keer Uri Caine en dirigent Örjan Falhstöm als dirigetn, met het project Citizen Caine. Een aardig concert, beter dan donderdag, maar niet echt overtuigend.
(Next was the second performance of the hr-Bigband with Uri Caine as composer and Örjan Falhstöm as conductor., nice concert, better than on thursday.)
De avond eindigde met The Exploding Star Orchestra, een freejazz groep die iets te veel in de jaren zestig was blijven steken. Interressant maar niet overtuigend. Af en toe waren het zeven muzikanten die tegelijkertijd zeven solo's aan het spelen waren. Binnen een half uur waren 500 van de 1000 bezoekers vertrokken.
(The evening ended with The Exploding Star Orchestra, a freejazz group that still lives in the sixties. Interesting but not convincing. At times the seven musicians were playing seven solo's at once. 500 of the 1000 visitors left within half an hour.)
